2013 MTV Video Music Awards - BackstageKanye West donated 1,000 copies of his own album to a Chicago homeless shelter on Thanksgiving.

According to local TV station KCHC, the rapper personally dropped off several boxes of CDs yesterday to the Open Spaces Community Shelter on Chicago’s South Side.

“I just wanted to bring some joy into these people’s lives on Thanksgiving,” he told the station. “When you’re hungry and you don’t have a place to live, the most important thing you need is inspiration. And that’s what my music is: It’s inspiration.

“They say if you give man a fish he eats for a day, but if you teach a man how to fish he eats for a lifetime. Well, my music teaches people how fish the ocean of life. It teaches them how to be better human beings.”

Although Open Spaces usually has an annual Thanksgiving Dinner, budget cuts forced the shelter to cancel this year. Residents were eating a meal of vegetable broth and white bread when Kanye walked through the doors.

“My first thought was ‘What the hell is Kanye West doing here?’ ” says Wilson Jones, a longtime Open Spaces resident. “And my second thought was ‘Why the f**k is he bringing a bunch of hungry people cardboard boxes full of CDs.’”

Kanye tried to distribute the albums to the homeless, but most residents were mostly angry that he didn’t bring food.

“I told Kanye could go fuck himself,” says Jason Pillar, another homeless man. “Nobody in this shelter even has a CD player. They’re just round pieces of plastic to us.

“Then he started talking about teaching us how to eat fish dicks for something. I couldn’t even understand what he was saying. I just remember thinking to myself ‘This guy is a real piece of work.’ ”

The management of Open Spaces say they’re disappointed in Kanye’s gift and won’t be inviting him back next year. West himself, however, appeared happy with his efforts.

“Those homeless people I met today could be millionaires. All they need to do is to listen to my music regularly. Then the sky’s the limit,” he proclaimed.
