Immediately after for Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner announced to Diane Sawyer and 17 million television viewers that he is now a woman, East German Olympic officials demanded her medals be stripped and given to the runner-ups.
Jenner won the decathlon gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics. This accomplishment catapulted the athlete to American stardom including being the first man to grace the cover of the Wheaties cereal box.
East German officer Boris Himmler told the German newspaper Neues Deutschland , “Jenner admitted he is a woman. By the rules of the Olympics, woman cannot compete against men. So, If he’s a woman, he shouldn’t have been able to compete against our men.
“In Germany we always play by the rules, hence, we demand the gold medals be returned to the rightful winners. Fair is fair.”
The East German Olympic Committee has given Jenner 48 hours to send the gold medals to Germany. The United States Olympic Committee has yet to officially comment but one source told ESPN, “What the Hell are the East Germans talking about? The Cold War is over.”
Keeping Up With The Jenners
Jenner responded to the East German official telling Variety, “I think Germany has bigger issues at hand.
“As they continue to struggle from recession, investors shorting their country’s bonds, and Nazi guards standing trial, my sexuality is none of their business.”
In the ABC interview Jenner vowed to change the world by her admission that she identifies as a woman. Both the Kardashian and Jenner family have been very supportive.
Jenner went as far to say, “Kanye has been very curious about my transformation and the detailed steps involved in the transgender process but I’m not sure why.”
While Jenner said this was not a publicity stunt, she did tell the trade newspaper, “Be sure to check out my new reality show on E! Network and continue following Keeping up with the Kardashians. You never know what our family will do next.”
